Held at the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney, the Golden Slipper is worth $3.5 million in prize money and is open to two-year-olds. A sprint race, the Golden Slipper is run over a distance of 1200 metres. Known as the richest two-year-old race to be held internationally, access into the Golden Slipper field is highly sought after. There is automatic entry allocated to horses that have won races including Skyline Stakes, Magic Night Stakes, Pago Pago Stakes, Todman Stakes, Sweet Embrace Stakes, Silver Slipper Stakes and the Reisling Stakes.
A Group 1 thoroughbred race, the Cox Plate is held at the Moonee Valley Racecourse. The race is run in October annually and covers a distance of 2040 metres. With $3 million in prize money available, the Cox Plate is renowned for attracting some of the best weight-for-age horses to be found in Australia and New Zealand. The fourth richest horse race in Australia, the Cox Plate receives close to 200 nominations each year, as one of the most coveted horse racing titles.
One of Australia’s premier horse races, the Caulfield Cup is run over a distance of 2400 metres. The Group 1 thoroughbred race is open to horses from three years and above and offers $3 million in winnings, making it one of the richest handicap races in the world. The race is held at the Caulfield Racecourse annually in October and is one of the earlier races that make up the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Winners of the Caulfield Cup also gain automatic entry into the Melbourne Cup field. Generally, most of the horses to be nominated for the Melbourne Cup will also run in the Caulfield Cup.
